Blogs I tend to read, sorted by category, with a brief description. [Note: As you can see, it is still a work in progress. The previous iteration had too many sites last updated years ago. I will add the blurbs as I prune. ] Those that I often link to are marked with a star (⭐️). This is not a list of every RSS feed I follow. For that, Feedland is a better, though not necessarily always up-to-date, source.
Science and Medicine
- ⭐️ Experimental HistoryFairly frequent essays from Adam Mastroianni, PhD in psychology, which are at once humorous and enlightening.
- ⭐️ Ruxandra's SubstackRuxandra Tesslo is an Oxford PhD (candidate?) who writes about clinical trials and, less frequently, women in medicine.
- ⭐️ Statistical Modeling, Causal Inference, and Social ScienceThe blog of one Andrew Gelman (and assorted guest-contributors). The platonic ideal of an OG science blog, even though many of their posts go way over my head.
- ⭐️ In the PipelineDerek Lowe has been writing about drug discovery and the pharmaceutical industry in Science for as long as I have been an adult. Respect, even when I disagree.
- DrugMonkeyA regularly updated blog on drug development and science funding from an anonymous author who seems to have a history with or at the NIH. Interesting reading, even if (or precisely because) or biases don't align.
- Alex’s blogInfrequent but high-quality posts about biotech.
- Liminal MDBryan Vartabedian is one of the original early-2000s medical bloggers who, keeping up with the times, now posts on Substack. I won't hold that against him.
- FDA Law BlogRegular updates on US drug development regulation. Ocasionally interesting.
- Precious Bodily FluidsAnother OG medicine blogger is the nephrologist Joel Topf. He still ocasionally writes, though not nearly as frequently as in the heydays of blogging.
- The Mathematical Oncology BlogI often compain about the lack of "theoretical biology" as a discipline, but here is a regularly updated collection of links about at least a subset of that field.
- Casey Handmer's blogThoughtful, long posts about space egineering.
- Material WorldEd Conway is the economics and data editor at Sky News, but likes to write about more down-to-earth things such as, well, materials. Long posts, about once per month.
- Prediction Markets NewsletterHarry Crane is a professor of statistics at Rutgers and a professional gambler who doesn't mind sharing about either of his two crafts.
- The Eighteenth ElephantOnce-monthly updates on academic living from Raghuveer Parthasarathy, a professor of physics at University of Oregon.
- Discoverers and DiscoveriesMemories of Jim Olds, who has had various leadership positions at the National Science Foundation. Sadly, many of the more recent posts suffer from too much AI editorializing.
Economy and Finance
- ⭐️ Marginal REVOLUTION: marginalrevolution.comAn OG blog which keeps chugging along. At this point I am hate-reading Tyler Cowen more than anything. He ocassioanly though ever-less-so-frequently, links to something interesting.
- ⭐️ Kyla’s Newsletter: kyla.substack.comExcellent economic analysis from a young economist who made her name on TikTok. Doesn't write often enough.
- ⭐️ Global Inequality and More 3.0: branko2f7.substack.comBranko Milanović, telling it like it is.
- The Pursuit of Happiness: scottsumner.substack.comScott Sumner, previously of The Money Illusion, now on Substack. Would have a star next to the name were it not for the paywall.
- Of Dollars And Data: ofdollarsanddata.comNick Maggiulli writes about personal finance from the perspective of someone with a young family.
- Citation Needed: www.citationneeded.newsMolly White writes about the bizzaro world of cryptocurrency.
- Steve Blank: steveblank.comAn old blog with a new theme: AI.
